FishSC Marketing Promotion & Contest
The Old 96 District Tourism Commission (Old 96 District) and the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (DNR) partnered with Shafer & Huguley to determine the feasibility of offering Western North Carolina fishing enthusiasts an incentive to travel and fish in selected South Carolina lakes. The goal was to encourage fishing in Lakes Greenwood, Russell, Secession, and Thurmond, and hence, increase the quantity of South Carolina fishing licenses purchased during the first and second quarters of 2010.
With the lakes located over 100 miles from the Western North Carolina area an incentive was communicated to encourage fishing enthusiasts to fish in these lakes. Fishing enthusiasts had the opportunity to win $50,000 during the first and second quarters of 2010. WLOS-TV, the ABC network affiliate located in Asheville, NC, promoted the opportunity to win through a TV schedule and viewers were encouraged to register in a Mobile Marketing program, the FishSC Club. A web site (FishSC.info) was developed to promote the fishing opportunity and serve as the electronic registration portal.
The program attracted 300+ text club members and an additional 135 people who registered for the contest. Grand Prize Promotions (GPP) of Richardson, Texas served as the insurance underwriter of the FISHSC promotion, and a winner was selected.
